The sixth edition of the “Guyana Where and What”, a magazine which serves as a tour guide for tourist and visitors to Guyana’s shores, was officially launched, yesterday, at the Tourism, Industry and Commerce Ministry, South Road office.
Tourism, Industry and Commerce Minister (ag), Irfaan Ali used the opportunity to congratulate its author, Mrs. Gem Madhoo-Nascimento on yet another successful edition, which he said will significantly aid in the enhancement of the tourism sector. He explained too that the guide will serve to complement other local publications, such as the GTA’s monthly newsletter, the Explore Guyana Magazine and the recently conceptualized Invest Guyana Magazine; which will have its primary focus on the Tourism Sector.
“I want to congratulate Gem Madhoo-Nascimento for another amazing piece of work and for finding the time to put together this publication. We at the Ministry have no difficulty in supporting this initiative as we recognize the far reaching benefits and extensive coverage this book receives,” Minister Ali stated.
Alluding to other advantages of this particular publication, the Tourism Minister pointed to the “pull factor” the content provides, which encourages the readers to come to Guyana and experience the rich culture and attractions; it is used as marketing tool internationally.
Minister Ali explained, “This book goes into the Historical context in a very simple but effective manner which has a tremendous pull for visitors. Even the cover depicts aspects of the foundation of our tourism product, with the Kaieteur Falls, in addition to the image of the Jaguar which symbolizes the strength and resilience of our emerging tourism sector.”
Also speaking at the launching ceremony was the acting President of the Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG), Mr. Daniel Gajie, who congratulated the author for sustaining the publication over the past 6 years.
He said, “This is another example of the Private Sector producing an important marketing tool for Guyana to complement the Government’s efforts. This also shows that our partnerships are working.”
Mrs. Madhoo-Nascimento said that 20,000 copies of the magazine have since been printed; she also pointed to the fact that the most recent publication has fewer pages and a number of other additions, including a comprehensive, pull out map of Georgetown.
The annual edition of the magazine which was compiled by the General Executive Management Services Inc (GEMS Inc) by its publishers Kit Nascimento and Gem Madhoo-Nascimento, features a map of the capital city, location and contacts of favourite hot spots, banks, fast food outlets, supermarkets and hospitals.
